they need to go through cold stratification period in order to germinate

You need to scarify them by scrapping the outter shell and putting them in the fridge until they germinate. You can google for more ino.

the last few i did that to got thrown out by my dad. hes old school put them in soil water them everyday.

not all seeds are that easy to grow that way, as the same with plums, grapes, apples.
