Rose of Sharon is a deciduous flowering shrub that is a member of the hibiscus family, known for it's profuse blooms from summer until frost. It's also good for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.

I have some that are over 15' tall and they need about 6' width. Prune any way you want. They bloom from the tips, so you can prune after first bloom and get more blooms. They tolerate heat well. It doesn't start leafing out until it gets warmer, but quickly makes up for the wait.
