Gold-filled items, even with daily wear, can last five to 30 years but will eventually wear through. The gold layer on gold-plated jewelry varies greatly depending on manufacturer, so there is no single, simple comparison. Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plating, and 17 to 25,000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplate (sometimes stamped HGE or HGP—usually found on cubic zirconia "cocktail rings").

Just to be fair. I'm a 40 yr Alaskan Resident. That may be gold filled backing. But that's PLACER GOLD attached to it. About ten bucks worth.

Placer gold nuggets are used by jewelers for over 100 yrs. basically as a gold plate in olden days. they're very thin, so they melt real easy. One heats to soldering temp and drop the gold 'nuggets' which are actually flakes. and the gold adheres to the surface of the metal, but gives bigger nugget effect if one doesn't heat too hot. It's basically 18 - 23 kt TRUE gold plate.

"Genuine Gold Nugget" Jewelry is totally different. Genuine GN is made of SOLID gold nuggets at least 1/16th of an inch or better thick. It's EXPENSIVE. Genuine Nuggets are RARE.

NOBODY puts GOLD Nuggets on anything less than 14kt. just for your future reference. Gold content of nuggets is never higher than 22kt. or it would be too soft to use and break easily. Solid gold can attach to other minerals too, usually quarts, Very rarely hematite (black diamond) will also have gold naturally mingled with it, so will jade. Nice find in either case.

Today, the gold layered silver has replaced the gold filled items. Fewer people are allergic to silver as brass. Remember the 60s? Which came first the turtle neck or the chains and pendants? Every chain was gold filled then.

This item is likely valuable antiquity-wise also. They stopped making GF items like that long time ago back in the early 70s, when they figured out the same process lends itself too to 10k gold and would sell at at a 500% profit. Fairbanks was a very small town. I knew several jewelers there. Knew one that actually went and bought out most of these in town when he ran out of placer gold, but found out the look couldn't be duplicated by melting the gold but sold the man made nuggets as man made nuggets, and recouped most his loss. Brass is actually a porous metal and sucks in such plating which is why it was so largely used.
