The listing, +++1857 FLYING EAGLE PENNY+++156 YEARS OLD+++OMGosh! LOW GIN 22,222 has ended.

+++1857 Flying Eagle Penny+++157 YEARS OLD+++This is the oldest US coin I've personally auctioned here on Listia and if you don't have it, JUMP ON IT NOW! It was only minted 1856-1858. The coin is actually in reasonably good condition for a circulated coin of this age. All details are worn but readable & you can still detect many of the feathers in the eagles wings. There are no notable scratches on the obverse and a few small dings on the reverse, but nothing remarkably notable. While this coin IS dirty, it has clear fields & beautiful rims on the both obverse & reverse with one very small ding of the the right hand side of the obverse rim. You can certainly find one in better condition, but it won't be cheap!

THIS IS A LOW GIN SINCE YEOMAN'S OFFICIAL REDBOOK HAS A STARTING VALUE OF $28 FOR THIS COIN!

Questions & Comments

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: By the mid-1850s it was apparent to Mint officials that the large copper cents struck since 1793 were too cumbersome and unpopular, as well as increasingly uneconomical to make. The idea of fiduciary coinage, based on the trustworthiness of the issuing authority, not on the coin’s intrinsic value, was beginning to catch on as well. Sooner or later the “big coppers” would have gone the way of the dinosaur, but it was the large numbers of small Spanish colonial silver coins in use throughout the United States that finally made it imperative that smaller cents had to be struck, and not necessarily of pure copper.
