Remedy for an Old House

Like the hande that fixed a single
moon on the black sky,
hang on the wall something amazing -

a long cabin quilt stiched
in reds and blues and yellows and greens
back in 1930

under which a man and a woman
stayed warm
without money.
That look was enough.

morning reflections over the miso soup

the silence of knife
flat on cutting board
speaks to me of morning

mottled leaves
fat robins finishing off berries
the dog who won't leave the door

spears of scallions
sprinkled atop the steam of miso
bobbing green boats
in a hot brown sea

my wife wants to know
what time it is
