I bought this for my 14 year old grandson but he didn't want it so I have never tried it. The box says; "Real Tornado sound effects, included accessories show tornado action. Bonus Storm Chasers DVD included! Peep through clear top into the eye of the tornado. Create exciting whirlpools and bubble storms. 5-speed tornado control". This is brand new in the box unopened.

Oops I am sorry, I forgot it takes 3 AA batteries that are not included.

I think it also only uses water and the accessories in the box but no chemicals that I am aware of. The box does not say anything about using chemicals. Since it is from Discovery Kids I am guessing that it is very safe.
