How To Germinate And Plant Tobacco Seeds
1. To germinate tobacco seeds, do not cover them with soil. They need daylight to germinate. Place the containers with the seeds near a window or use an "All-Spectrum" electrical light source.
2. Use a water spray bottle to keep the soil always moist, but not wet. If the seeds dry out, they will die! Check the soil for moisture several times during the day until the seeds have germinated. Do not use distilled water!
3. A good temperature for the seed to germinate is about 75 - 80 degrees F.
4. Germination could begin already after three days. Longer (up to 14 days) under imperfect conditions.
5. Tobacco seeds do not contain any nutrients for the seedling to grow. They depend strongly on the soil. You need to use fresh, good soil. A good soil to germinate and to grow your tobacco plants is composted cow manure (available in bags) mixed with garden soil. If not available, then use tomato planting soil.
6. Keep direct sunlight away while germinating the seeds and from your young tobacco plants, until you have acclimatized them.
7. If you want your plants to develop more seeds, then planting some catnip herbs nearby is advisable. Hardly any other plant draws as many bees and other insects for pollination into your garden. You will be surprised how well this works! All of our seed packages come with some free catnip seeds.
8. Remove any weeds from around your tobacco plants as they take away too much water. Weeding makes a big difference!
9. Regularly water your tobacco plants.
