Description

The listing, 20 1956d Wheat Pennies Appear Uncirculated *FREE SHIPPING* has ended.

20 pennies, all 1956 Denver mint. Although they vary in brightness in my photos, this is due to the lighting. Most appear brand new, possibly uncirculated, and very bright.

ALWAYS FREE SHIPPING in the US.

I will ship to Canada for $8, and can ship MULTIPLE small items at no added cost Overseas Priority shipping is $14 to MOST locations, but I will NOT ship to China (sorry). You MUST use Paypal. I can ship MULTIPLE small items for one shipping fee.

I am not a collector--just getting rid of a bag of coins bought for my kids a few years ago--mostly international, these are among the few US coins I have. None have been cleaned. I am doing my best to identify them--PLEASE let me know if I need to change anything in my descriptions!

A few i would grade just short of BU just because of alittle uneven toning. I saw at least 4 that should grade BU
at Bu the the ask price should be around 30 cents each.

Thanks Ska ... good info. Some of the shading is my photographs. I take them under a small light, so the larger lots like this aren't all as well illuminated. These also were the fist coin photos I took. I think I've gotten a little better at deflecting the light to reduce glare and show the coins more accurately.

way of fixing that is an led light with a thin sheet of paper in front of it to block most of the light. then turn off flash or you can fiddle with picture. But as you say only works for small lots large lots are difficult to photograph. i usually photograph coins in squares of 4, that helps.

I've been tipping the light to the side, so the detail in the coin really pops up in the shadow. Gives them more contrast. I'm always fooling around with new photo techniques, but putting some sort of wax paper or something over the bulb probably would help. I use a lamp with one of those long compact flourescent multi-tube bulbs, so it's a nice natural light but not really that bright (18 watts, I think).
Feb 18th, 2010 at 7:12:06 PM PST by
Original
for silver coins i use a regular light bulb with a yellow tint gives a gold finish to the shadows of silver
any other coin compact led lights work. They sell "coin lights" but i am not paying 60$ for that. Led lights give a nice white light shine and adjusted right gives a great look. Also taking a picture at a slight angle can get an amazing result.
comes out something like this

also picking a good textured background is good. My favorite is cardboard from the back of a notebook pad or black foam or anything else with nice contrast and texture.

Nice pics! I prefer to bleed out the color in the silver coins, though. Generally they come out pretty accurate, but I can desaturate them a little if needed with the photo software. I use photobucket as well. I currently have all my beads on it (but am removing them as they are sold on Listia). I was thinking of putting the coins in an album there as well, but I think I'm just going to list them as I go on Listia. My two auctions that ended tonight went well, 200 credits each, so I'm kind of pumped. They were my first coin auctions!

that is not photo shopped at all and taken with a junky 4.1mp camera =p macro focus is key and it takes a while to get used to using it with smaller objects.
soon as my coin holders come in from the supplies i am going to sell pieces of my hoard.

My camera is about the same, an older Canon Photosmart, but has a good macro lens. I keep telling people they don't need a fancy camera for these really sharp photos, the little basic ones work pretty well. I don't photoshop photos, but I use the basic photo software to crop, adjust colors so they are correct, and increase the contrast if needed so they don't look faded. With the right setup I don't have to adjust them much, except for the cropping. Some days I seem to get better photos than others, though!

All my auctions are wysiwyg (what you see is what you get). I will be away tonight and tomorrow, returning Saturday evening. I can probably get online at some point, but won't be able to respond to comments as quickly as usual.

30$ camera lol cameras are 90% skill 10% camera.
in all honesty the cheaper cameras are so much easier. The 500$+ cameras need manual focusing and twisting the lens like 3 different ways for 1 shot. I point and click.
Feb 19th, 2010 at 11:39:43 AM PST by
Original
I hear ya ... the cheaper cameras work great for these photos! I have a nice camera that is great for taking action shots of the kids and other stuff, but it just too large and bulky for listings. My little Canon A series powershots are much easier. I only use cameras that take AA batteries and SD cards, though, which kind of narrows it down to the Canon A series. I've bought a bunch of cameras in the past year for my kids (who keep losing or breaking them) and have had several to test out for these macro closeups.

Thanks! Unless I run into some more old coins (I'll be looking at them all now), these are the only US coins I have. But the foreign coins I have are really cool, very varied. I know they don't usually have much $$$ value, but they have fantastic designs. I can see why people get hooked ... I'm trying not to LOL!

yeah, it's VERY easy to get hooked! I've been collecting since I was like 15 or so (I just turned 35 today). Thus, it's become a way of life for me LOL

Happy Birthday ... you must be a natural Cupid! It's a fun hobby, because most coins don't cost very much, so you can do a lot with it. The history of the coins is really fascinating, too. I've become more interested in history as I've gotten older, but for me it was because I got into antiques about 10 years ago.

They were in a ziplock bag for all the time I've had them. I can't remember what they came in when I bought them at an auction. So, they've gotten a little roughed up from being with other coins, but seemed to have been kept out of the air most of their existence .. not much patina on them.

Auctions are fun.. sucks our local auction shut down this past week. What really sucked was the week I had a chance to buy tons of old/rare coins for a dollar a piece, but I was saving up to pay wrestlers I was putting on a benefit show for.. but the show never happened, because I got screwed out of the ring. Still makes me mad, a dollar a piece!!
Feb 14th, 2010 at 12:14:23 PM PST by

I go to a local weekly auction here. They don't have a lot of coins, but I've never really paid much attention to them before. Coins tend to do well enough at auctions that I don't get involved, because I don't know enough about them. I'm sure I bought these coins because they were going cheap, and I thought my kids might be interested ... NOT.
