You use it on the computer end. You still need a router connected to your network or cable to work. Yes, you can use this anywhere there is wif.

Plug the USB into the computer. Mac/Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8/Ubuntu will automatically download & install driver if you're connected to the internet. After that, you can use the computer (with this device plugged in) to pick up available wifi signals
