Our main dietary goal is to reduce the load of metabolic wastes on the kidneys; this waste results from excess protein , phosphorus, and sodium. Since most of the waste (urea) results from protein, you must feed a minimal level of protein of maximally usable quality. Also, it is vital to replace water-soluble vitamins that get flushed out of the body easily, especially vitamins B and C, and to supply plenty of vitamin A, which is good for the kidneys. :) The following recipe meets this need (which I am including for free). It provides 16 percent of protein for dogs. (there is one for cats too, but not included and there is a huge difference so please do not attempt to feed any cat the dog recipe and vice versa) all of the protein is of high quality. We use enriched white rice because it is better digested than brown rice and also contains higher levels of iron and major B vitamins, which are harder to supply in a low-protein diet. Choose a well-assimilated form of calcium, such as calcium lactate, calcium gluconate, or eggshell powder in the recipe (1/3 teaspoon for dogs) Avoid calcium supplements containing phosphorus. The pet vitamins insure adequate amounts of essential nutrients which could become low in this diet, otherwise. This diet is also low in ash, which makes it more than suitable for your K-9 babies who are more prone to stone formation and urinary obstruction. :)
