Agave vilmoriniana 'Variegata' (Variegated Octopus Agave) - A very unusual looking succulent with subtlety-variegated narrow green leaves that twist back towards the ground, making it look like a 4 feet tall and wide spider or octopus. Arching deeply-furrowed leaves are unarmed, making this Agave a relatively safe plant for walkway areas or container growing. It should be noted that the leaf margins, while unarmed to the eye, can have small serrations and be fairly sharp. Plant in full sun. Tolerates drought and cold temperatures to 24 ° F. As with other Agave the main plant dies after flowering but this plant produces no suckers to replace itself. It does produce many new "plantlets" (or bulbils) within the inflorescence that can perpetuate the plant within the garden. Once this plant develops a bud it dies. The bud has many babies that can be cultivated and separated from the blossom. Blossom can grow to be 20-30 feet tall.
Plant will be shipped bare root.
Size may range from 4" to 8" tall and or diameter.
The photo above was taken at night of my large mother plants.
The largest is five feet across and stands 4+ feet tall.
They do have sharp spines on the edges of the leaves. Care has to be taken when near them or working with them.
This makes a very nice center piece for a garden. Babies do form from the root before the plant is totally mature or blooms.
