Yes, it is suitable for that purpose. It does measure grains (GN).

If you are using this to weigh in grains (GN) for weighing gun powder to reload ammo, I would highly recommend recalibrating this regularly, using the built in feature, to maintain the highest safety level possible... that's like miniature bomb making. Be careful.
