This works great and safe to be around kids. My husband shared this recipe 4 years ago when we got our dog. Being from Southern Illinois I know that it is very easy for people to bring fleas or even ticks in unknowingly on their clothes, especially if you have kids. Let face it kids love to run play in trees on the ground. :*) With this spray you should also spray your home. That should keep your cats, the babies and you safe from bites.

Is this safe to spray on cats or dogs that have a tendency to clean themselves frequently?

It will Not hurt them at all but they will not like how it taste when they are cleaning. This will last for a few hours then they will be able to clean themselves.
