This is a 3 disc BLU RAY set: Superman The Movie, Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut, and Superman Returns (Brian Singer - Director has always said that Donner's '78 version was what made him want to be in the movies. In fact, the first person Singer revealed his plans on Superman Returns was Donner). I watched "The Donner Cut" for the second time ever last night. The flow between these movies is undeniable. Singer's homage to Donner at the beginning of Returns is a quote by Brando that was removed from the original Part 2 and definitely answered a lot of questions.

Is this the extended edition of Superman the Movie or the Theatrical release?

This is THE extended version of the film. This is the longest version of the film that was ever made. It is referred to as the 2000 Director's Cut of the "Salkind International Extended Cut". If you can follow all of that. The Salkind Cut was created for ABC in 1982. They agreed to pay the Salkinds (owned the tv rights) on a quantity basis. Therefore, every bit of footage they could get their hands on went into this. Once ABC got the film it was 3hrs 8mins long and had to be shown over two nights. It was the first time ABC attempted to show one movie simultaneously world wide, hence the "International" title. At the time, Warner Brother actually paid the Salkinds not to consult with Donner. In 2000 about 12 tons of the original footage from 1 & 2 was found. Warner Brothers reconsidered and hired Donner to make this cut. You will see: Lois Lane pointing him out to her parents as a little girl on the train that Teenage Superman out runs, Superman go through an array of obstacles when he locates Luthor's hideout, and much more.
