The listing, Flattened Pressed Penny Houston Zoo Giraffe Animal has ended.
This is a genuine flattened "pressed" penny.
It is a Flattened penny collectible souvenir only available from:
HOUSTON ZOO / GIRAFFE
Coin date: unknown
Usually the visitor to the business or tourist attraction would place a penny, along with two or more quarters into a penny roller machine, then they would on some machines choose one of several collectible designs by turning a knob, or pressing a button.
To press the penny, then they either would hand crank a gear, or press a start button and this would engage two steel rollers to grip the penny -- your inserted penny --forcing the image you see above on one side of the coin, and flatten the other side. The two quarters are the revenue to the business.
So what you see cost someone 51 cents (or more) once upon a time.
A fun way to collect pennies.
Pennies after 1982 are copper plated zinc, that is why you see white metal look on some pressed pennies, not on others.
The extra in flattened penny is shown for comparison purposes, and not included.
