Earth has been fighting a war with an alien race for more than five decades. Countless soldiers have died trying to stop the enemy, known as the Genjyu. Now, a much younger generation is expected to step forward in battle. Several high school students (including Atsushi Hayami) join the 5121st Platoon, to revitalize the Japanese military and win the war. In these episodes, Unit 5121 finds each member of the forces dealing with the psychic scars of battle. The toll is almost too much to bear when their next mission places them in certain danger of defeat. In later episodes, the media becomes enthralled with the 5121st Platoon. Hayami and a mysterious soldier named Mai find themselves the enter of attention. When another unit requests that Mai join them, Hayami has just a short time to confess his true feelings. The Genjyu are increasing their attacks, and tension builds as Hayami fears he will lose Mai forever.
