it is new. Whiting and Davis is still making these.

Whiting and Davis was sold and is a sub company now. The same people who own Jansen leathers and Vanessa handbags bought them in the 1996. The majority of their newer bags are mad overseas. The bags worth money are ones made here in the US like this bag. Newer bags chain mail feels almost plastic coated. I worked for them at the factory store in massachusetts for a few yrs. this opera bag is a gorgeous specimen of American craftsmanship. F&w!

So happy for the info. I have carried these for 40 years, in cig cases to billfolds to eye glass cases, as well as the little lighter covers. I quit smoking a few years back and stopped carrying the cig case, but still have the billfold and a couple purses. I know the quality had changed, but was not sure why.
