The first ruler (equivalent to US president) was Frederich Ebert who ruled from February 1919 until his death in February 1925 when the position was taken by Hitler's immediate predecessor, Paul von Hindenburg whom also died during his reign. The governmental powers established by the Weimer Constitution in 1919 ceased in May 1945, one month after Hitler's suicide and replaced by the German Constitution in 1949.
