The listing, (3) 1943 Steel Pennies PDS mints Rare has ended.
The 1943 steel penny is a wartime issue made of steel, and coated with zinc. During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort (to make shell casings) that the U.S. penny was made out of steel. Steel pennies are scarcely found in circulation but when they were being circulated it is said that many people mistook them for dimes. After the war the mints made an attempt to round up all the steel pennies which caused these coins to become even more rare. Steel pennies are an interesting piece of history and great for collectors of all ages. This would make a great first set for someone just getting interested in coin collecting. Happy bidding!
Up for grabs are three 1943 steel pennies from three different mints. I have attached a picture of the coins that I will be shipping out. The copper penny will not be shipped out due to weight limits but it does show how they compare to their sister copper cents. This item has free shipping within the United States of America. .
Exactly......I had never really looked into coins(the hubby collects) until this site. Now Im searching everything I see. I know the copper ones go for amazing amounts, lol. As for the steel being rare to most people I would have to agree not many people are aware of them or the HISTORY behind them. Sounds to me like you are not only offering a part of history but also educating while you are at it. Nice listing. My hubby has some of these or I would bid on them.
LOL if you do have a 1943 copper penny you better keep that. Those ones are rare the steel ones are fairly common and worth from 10 cents to 50 cents depending on the condition. The copper one however is worth ALOT
1943 copper pennies are more than rare. There were only a handful made and they go for more than the average person would want to pay for something that at one time was worth a cent. I still think the steel pennies are rare just by the definition of rare. Most people I talk to have never seen a steel cent.
Yup, shows you that all the goodies and raw materials we have are not endless ... and now the US and other Western countries are using up all that can be had all over the world. At least we'll have all the copper if another world war starts up, God forbid ...
woohoo!! looking for to battle LOL *heheeheh* howdy again Mozingo...I'm ready for round two....let's see if I can get this one this time eh? LOL *pulls out the bidding guns* LOL
Got a little advice ... take your photos on a white background, it will make them pop a little better. A pillowcase or something like that works well (just don't use like mohair or any other fuzzy stuff!). Good luck Mozzy!
