The listing, 1917 quarter dollar has ended.
You are bidding on a 1917 quarter dollar. its not in the best shape, you can see it...( im no collector so I dont know anything about grading coins). Im not sure what material it is made from though its heavy weighing in at around 18 grams.. thanks for looking and happy bidding.
Questions & Comments
If it weighs 18 grams, then it is some kind of replica or has been altered in some way. A quarter from back then should only weigh about 6.25 grams.
I wouldn't call myself a coin expert, but I've been collecting for 25+ years. Coin knowledge is not any further away than picking up one of the various publications I keep around for reference material.
Typically, an intentionally made replica is marked so it won't be confused with an original -- the word "copy" can be found on the coin somewhere in many cases. This coin wouldn't be an overly obvious choice to counterfeit, unless it were counterfeited in a much better condition.
If you look at the back of your coin in particular, it almost looks like it has been dipped / coated with something. Near the tail feathers, it appears the coating has been gouged out a little. I'm also suggesting it's been coated because the color looks off, even if it would just be really dirty / tarnished from age. It's obviously hard to say for sure from a pic, but I'm curious if it is a real quarter that was dipped in something like lead somewhere along the line -- based on the color, appearance of the finish, extra weight, and how all the coin's details look obscured more than worn. I've seen odd things done to real coins, so the idea of having dipped this one in something wouldn't surprise me. All of that is just my opinion, and I'm only going off the pix that are posted.
Well , now that I look at it theres another mystery to this coin.. it has something stamped on the outside where its ridged.. Its actually double stamped so it cant be read.. I will try to get a pic of it.
fsn77 are you a coin expert?.what is your background for coin knowledge?. do you know of replicas of this coin being made?.. just wondering if its a forgery or a replica.. or is there a difference? is this something that is illegal?
Yes, if not stamped copy it is illegal to profit from this coin but you can give it away or counterstamp it yourself to be on the safe side, good luck!
Well then Since this site is about giving things away I am not chrging for it.. and I have not misrepresented it... for all I know the stamp on the outside says copy or something like that I just cant read it.
Toucan put this on a regular envelope between a couple pieces of paper and tape it in place and ship with a regular stamp. I guess I should have read the whole listing because this looks fake. I bid to win not knowing the full details if I were you and your honest I would remove this auction ...
