I know, I just haven't heard of a RAM card being differentiated by pins, rather than being addressed as PCI, PCI-E or SDR

ddr1 ddr2 and ddr3 all have diff. # of pin. and you said it was ddr1 so they should of know if its right or not

Gigabyte = approximately 1000 Megabytes = 1,000,000 Kilobytes = Billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes)
Technically a Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes.

is this for a laptop? i have a dell inspirion 1100 it takes ddr1 and it has 512mb now but has two slots and is upgadeable to 1gb. will this work for me? or do i need 2 512's ?

This is for a Desktop, a Laptops ram card is about half the size.

if it is older computer and supports only 1gb i would say that it takes pairs meaning you would need 2 512mb sticks. according to the specs on your computer you need pc2100 SDRAM memory. according to the sticker on the memory stick it is pc2100 SDRAM.
