I have an alarm clock just like that from my great aunt. It is very loud. You just have to wind up the alarm before you go to sleep and wind up the clock so it keeps clicking.

I have a large Big Ben by Westclox and the hands glow in the dark...it was given to me by a resident who finally purchased a digital clock. It's a nice conversation piece since I keep forgetting to wind it every morning lol
I'm just spoiled with the electric clocks. It keeps pretty good time until about midday then it's about 5-10 minutes off. I I think the base is bakelite and mine has serial numbers on the bottom.
