Description

The listing, Sterling coin holder vintage ladies purse has ended.

I'm not really sure how to describe this... It looks really old... It says "Sterling" by the numbers "1238" on a spring loaded money clip type thing. Also it says "pat applied for" on what might have been a mirror at one point... It has coin slots that can hold half dollar pieces, quarters, dimes and an empty coin space that I assume is broken...there are allot of dents on the outside and looks as if someone was trying to buff the inside... 2 loops at the top for a chain. Gold? Gold tone? On the inside of the lid a with a pretty pattern. The outside has the initials "M.J.H." With lots of flowers... Lots of tarnish...
And it has a strange.... Smell... ?? Idk... Like onions???. ..lol
I don't know anything about this other than what I've told you... It was in my fathers house when he passed and that's how I got it...
If anyone know anything please let me know on really curious about this...

Actually this purse is Model 1238 and pre-dates 1910, The pictorial Mark is from the James e. Blake Company, circa 1889 to 1936 when they went out of Business, the damage does affect the value a lot, it is missing it's, Mirror and powder puff as well as the chain, this would be a fun restoration project, the inside would have been gilded and this is a more desirable Model with the 4 coin slots rather than the standard 2, the silver content is 925 of 1000 parts, meaning it is Sterling Silver, anything with a higher silver content would be marked Fine Silver. I love these old purses, the craftsmanship is amazing, Thank you for sharing :)

Sometimes, very old silver will smell kinda oniony because of the silver content which is high if it says 1238. That would make the silver content higher than the .925 you see on most jewelry these days. Anyway, I'd bet anything it used to hold cigarettes. And it looks like a later deco design, too, because the flowers are so highly stylized. Probably made in the 30s - pre WWII. After I looked again, I'm sure it's a cigarette holder. The flipper that is broken used to hold down the non-filter ciggies which we much shorter than modern cigarettes. Men and women both used to carry these before WWII and after the war they got a little bigger and fancier. Women started carrying a much more feminine style, too, so I'm betting this was made pre WWII and sometime after 1925 give or take 20 yrs. LOL Anyway, before the war it wasn't considered ladylike to smoke, so most of the cigarette cases were made for men, but in the Roaring twenties, there were really lots of fancy Art Deco style cigarette cases for women who usually smoked with those long, fancy cigarette holders that were sometimes 8-10" long. If you ever find one of those, hang onto it. They are very collectible and you could probably sell one of those to a dealer. However, these cases are much more common. Anything, else I can help you with, let me know. I am to serve and don't forget to stop by my listings, F & W and if you have a twitter account and are trying for your twitter badge, let me know. I'll send you my info, too.
