You can certainly use the amplifier to enhance your experience with the guitar.. though it's not absolutely necessary. My daughter has a guitar like this, so much fun for her and ... believe me, I can hear it just fine (=

Good question. I looked it up and it says 8+ yrs of age. Might be due to the fact that the guitar is made differently from other guitars out there. PaperJamz has Active Graphics Technology™ which allows for circuit-embedded paper, so all you have to do is "touch" the card-board like surface of the guitar "strings" to produce sounds. This might not be suitable for the rough and tumble young child... but with all that said, my daughter is only 5yrs old (just turned 5) and she can get pretty animated but handles the guitar well, with no problems. Check out the reviews online, there are also commercials on tv. Thanks for your inquiry!
