This book was used as a reader by many school systems 55+ years ago. It was aimed at 4th grade up. A family has moved from New York in a previous book in the series to a railroad-based growing town in the Midwest. It is the turn of the 20th Century. The changes being wrought by mechanization influence the kids, watching their world rapidly change. The town is actually Aurora, IL - name changed, but all the neighborhoods are real. Good reading for adults as a period piece. A tribute to people like my greatgrandparents, grandparents, Mom, aunts, and uncles and their world - before the Sixties and the decline of the East Side of Aurora into the slum it has been these last 50 years. A town and way of life long gone.
