Description

The listing, Vintage majolica-like frog cream pitcher and sugar bowl has ended.

Here's something for the frog collector.

These are ceramic, and they're in great vintage condition with just some age crazing on the sugar bowl. The pitcher is about 5 inches tall. Because of the crazing, I recommend you use these for decorations, not food.

These will cost between $6.00 and $12.00 to ship, depending on destination, so I have to charge for some of the shipping cost. Shipping will be $4.00 via PayPal, and will be by USPS parcel post. US only. You must pay shipping and give me your shipping address within three days of the end of the auction or you forfeit your credits and I will relist the item.

Cute! Any markings or stamps on the bottom?

Rats, I forgot to say that in my description: There are no markings or stamps on these. I do think that objects in this style were made by several companies; I've seen at least two different names. In addition to a couple of sets of creamer and sugar bowls, several larger pitchers, tea pots, salt and pepper shakers, candlesticks, and cups have all passed through my hands. Some have had various stamps, some have had hand written markings, some have had nothing. I see them in antique stores from time to time, and the large pitchers show up on eBay pretty often, but I haven't been able to find out much about them, not even to come up with a more accurate time period than "vintage." Sellers tend to describe them as "vintage" and "majolica-like" and leave it at that. They seem to me to have been inspired by 19th century figural majolica (e.g., the Edward Steele frog pitchers are a similar pose). For what it's worth, the unglazed rim on the bottom of these feels like stoneware, and they're certainly heavy enough to be stoneware. They colors are great and have that "lit from within" quality that some pottery glazes have. This also seems to be one of those vintage items whose value is completely circumstantial. I've seen these little cream and sugar sets go for anywhere from $15.00 to $50.00, depending on how much the seller thinks they can get and how much the buyer likes them. Hope some of that info helps you decide whether to bid!

Do you happen to have any more tea pots that you might auction off?

I don't, but if you might be in the market to pay cash for one, they appear on eBay regularly. I wouldn't say they're common, but you'll probably see one or two a month if you're looking for them. Sometimes they don't go very high (although they're quite large and $15 isn't unreasonable to ship one). They're funny--the teapot frogs are the same pose as the sugar bowl in this auction, and the pour spout is in the frog's mouth. (If you go looking for one, know that they have lids that look like the lid on the sugar bowl in this auction; you'd probably expect that, but I've often seen them for sale without lids and with no mention that the lid is missing.)
