The listing, Book-Ten Cents A Dance-2008 has ended.
Hardcover, ex-library book, with stickers. I cannot remove stickers b/c it will ruin the book. Bought at last year's library sale.
Ruby is a teenager living in the slums of Chicago in the early days of WWII. With her mother out of a job, and her sister too young for work, Ruby sets out for a job at the local meat canning plant. After awhile there, she meets a seedy young man who tells her to get a job as a Taxi Girl. Ruby gets the job, and lies to her mother, telling her that she got a job as an operator.
At Ruby's new job, men pay her 10 cents for a dance. She dances all night long. Sometimes these men take her out for dinner. When Ruby gets in way too over her head, and accidentally mixes in with the mafia, can she get out in time? Will her mom find out about Ruby's dangerous job?
This book was actually really good. I'm impressed.
