This roaring basilisk is one of several fierce and movable beasts from K’NEX’s Alive! Series of models, which kids can build from scratch. This building set includes 283 pieces comprised of the usual K’NEX "snowflake"-shaped connectors, bar-shaped spacers, and tiny rings, plus a bird-like head, sharp claws, and a few other scaly serpentine body parts. For kids familiar with these models, construction should be no problem but the uninitiated will probably require some ramp-up time to get the hang of how the pieces connect. Fortunately, the kit comes with an instruction book with detailed three-dimensional illustrations for building at three different challenge levels. The beginner level builds the beast’s basic frame and offers movable tail action via the included trigger. The moderate challenge level adds clawing functionality to the baselisk while the advanced level sets the dragon-like creature up to fire the three included missiles from its tail. At all levels, the battery-powered basilisk’s head pivots, emits a truly startling roar, and glows from the eyes and tongue. The head operates on three button cell batteries (included).
