Description

The listing, Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Charms - Tiered Auction has ended.

This is a tiered auction for four Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Charms. First a little history of Hex Charms and their origin. Often, a colonist family would have a designated symbol, choosing their own color, design and meaning, a combination of folk beliefs and superstition. Today Pennsylvania Dutch farmers still use and exhibit these Hex signs for good luck and to ward off evil with these symbols. They first began to be seen painted on barns in Pennsylvania in the early 1830's. Now a little bit about the meaning of the symbols painted on the charms:
* Distelfink – good luck and happiness
* Doves or Birds of Paradise – friendship, camaraderie, peace, purity and happiness
* Heart – true love, lasting love, and love for others
* Stars – protection against fires, good fortune, hope, love, fertility, energy and harmony
Colors
* Black – protection, also used to blend or bind elements together
* Blue – protection, peace, calmness and spirituality
* Green – growth, fertility, success in things and ideas that grow
* Red – emotions, passion, charisma, lust and also creativity
* White – purity, power of the moon, allows energy to flow freely
* Yellow - health in body and mind, love of man and the sun, connection to the God form

The 1st charm offered is a silver tone finish with enameled. It is 1cm or just slightly under .5 inches. It is the Love & Romance sign with red, blue and yellow petals and hearts set on a black background used to bind the elements together.

At 250 the next of three Hoffman 1950 era charms - all have an H stamped on the back (company is defunct) is yours - the Irish Luck charm set in gold tone and is 1cm or just slightly under .5 inches.

At 750 you get the Binding Love Hoffman charm, set in in gold tone and measures just over 1cm or exactly .5 inches.

At 1000 credits you get the 4th piece to complete the set, the Distelfin bird of happiness (highly sought after) & measures just over 1cm or exactly .5 inches.

Good Luck to All!!

I ran out of room, lol. I always ship within 3 business days and will send a delivery confirmation number to the winner. These aren't just good luck charms - they are never before used in mint collectible condition and since the Hoffman company is no longer in business will only appreciate in luck over time. As, always I thank you for looking at and bidding on my auctions :) You can follow my on twitter @katzcarcat to see what else I am up to!

So, since you are in Pennsylvania do you see the hex symbols painted or displayed a lot? I've never been there, but always thought from the pictures and books I've seen it would be a beautiful place to live. What is the best time to visit there? The fall pictures were always beautiful.
