you need the player's handbook to get started. There are so many RPG's and versions of each. Pick one you like and jump in. Have fun.

I am not into minis per say but it is helpful to have markers for monsters and players when in battle. Helps the players and DM alike. I have been playing since 1981 and with 3rd edition, minis or pogs is a must.

different versions are easier to understand if you look at them like sport video games (a new one comes out each year and its the same game just some of the mechanics have changed to make it better) I've been playing since 1978 and all the basics stay the rest just evolves as the players needs change. and minis or markers are a must for fourth eddition as well side not if you haven't checked it out look into Pathfinder it is D and D 3.5 rules continued from where they left off

I am not a fan of 4th edition. I prefer 3.0. But you are correct in saying that D & D is the same basically just some details have changed. The 3rd edition rules with the AC and saves made life so much easier and allows for unlimited character advancement.

I found a couple more miniatures that I am throwing into the package. They are not part of the set in the photo but could be useful in your gaming sessions.

There is no rush. If you win, I will hold the items until I get an address. I have held items (and am still holding items) for weeks. I get my credits as soon as the auction ends (one of the perks of being a trusted seller) so I am not being inconvenianced in any way. Some sellers get beligerant about notifying them with 24 hours or else blah, blah, blah.....I laugh when they claim they'll re-list & keep the credits. Because they don't get to do that. There is no rule on Listia saying a buyer has to notify the seller within a day or two. The seller has to ship the item no matter when the buyer contacts them or refund the credits. If the seller refuses to refund the credits then Listia will take them from the seller and return them to the buyer.
Anyhow, I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.
