PURPLE HEART -aka- Purple Queen, Purple Wandering Jew

Botanical: Tradescantia pallida 'Purpurea'

Synonyms » Setcreasea pallida, Setcreasea purpurea

Family: Commelinaceae (ko-mel-ih-NAY-see-ee)
Genus: Tradescantia (trad-es-KAN-tee-uh)
Species: pallida (PAL-lid-duh)
Cultivar: Purpurea

This is a great perennial groundcover that is quite drought tolerant after it is established. I grows to a height between 12 and 18 inches. Plants should be spaced 6 to 9 inches apart.

Hardy down to 10 °F / -12.2 °C, they thrive in full sun to part shade settings. Purple Queen is also suitable as a hanging houseplant. It is not too picky about soil fertility or type (even clay), desiring pH levels 5.6 to 7.8

Propogated by several methods » From leaf cuttings, herbaceous stem cuttings; by simple layering, air layering, tip layering, serpentine layering, stooling or mound layering. The very basic method is make something wet, make a hole in it and stick the cutting in it. Honestly. It is actually that easy.

Will these grow in zone 6? Do the starts have roots? Do you get more if GIN is used?

Carolyn, does it get colder than 10 °F for long periods where you live? These will be hardy out of doors in zones 8a - 11b.

Elsewhere they need to be sheltered indoors. In cooler climates, these are mostly houseplants. But you can grow them in large containers as long as they are sheltered from extended periods of freezing, such as in an attached garage. Lots of folks bring the containers indoors placing saucers under their containers and placing them in front of windows. They are gorgeous in or out if you pick the proper place for them to be.

These starts do not have roots . . . Honestly, they root quickly, like in 2-3 weeks. You just have to make some soil wet, poke a hole in it, and put about 1½ inches of the cutting in the hole and firm up the soil around it. Keep the soil moist for at least 3 weeks and then let Mother take care of them. Now if you have them in containers, they do need a bit more frequent watering but not too much ... No need to fertilize more than lightly once a year.

Well, yeah. There will be more than 5 starts . . . I usually can't limit myself to only the quoted number . . . I just will not short-change anyone. I *love* sending lagniappe, Catolyn. I really do.
