This charitable, fraternal (not political) group, was originally founded by some theater owners meeting to discuss a musicians' strike. The organization claims to have been the impetus for the creation of Mother's Day and the Social Security system—but it was neither democratic nor Democratic, with the capital "D".
In fact, Joe Louis (the "Brown Bomber"), World Heavyweight Champion Boxer, may have been the only non-Caucasian member of the organization before the 1980s, in part because members were voted in by a secret ballot using white and black balls. That's where that term, "black-balled" comes from — when you were rejected. Great little collectible!
