Monkshood is a perennial which is the last to bloom in my USDA zone 5b garden, from September-November if the weather is fine-which it usually is not around here. Other names for it Aconite and Wolfsbane. It was said to ward off werewolves. I can attest to this being true. I’ve yet to see a werewolf since planting this in my garden! Of course, I never saw one before either, but, that’s neither here nor there.

I wouldn’t ordinarily give this away except I inadvertently yank it out while I was wrestling with a wayward Wisteria vine—that’s a story in itself!

Anyway, Monkshood grows in USDA zones 4-8, to the height of about 3-4 feet tall with dark blue-purple flowers in the shape of—what else—a monk’s hood. The foliage is rather nice and unique. It makes a nice addition to any garden.
