The listing, 1940-M U.S. Sovereignty/Philippines 1 Centavo ~Very Mintage & Great has ended.
~GREAT FIND~WONDERFUL HISTORY~VERY UNIQUE~
~LOW MINTAGE~
For your consideration is this wonderful coin minted by the U.S. at the ONLY U.S. mint outside the U.S. This factor alone makes these coins extremely exceptional! With the exception of the 1920 San Francisco One Centavo, all U.S. Sovereignty/Philippine coins from 1920-1941 were produced @ the Manila Mint, the only United States branch mint ever established outside the continental U.S.A
During WWII the Manila Mint was not operational, & no coins circulated in the Philippines. When the U.S. retook the islands from Japan beginning in Oct. 1944, they carried w\ them new coinage of the USA/Philippines series. These were coined @ the Philadelphia, San Francisco & Denver Mints (the latter bore a D mintmark). The minor pcs. were of slightly different standards; a concession to the shortage of certain metals during the WWII. These coins quickly replaced the Japanese “funny-money” scrip & Filipino/American guerrilla notes then in use & remained legal tender for many years after the islands became the independent Republic of the Philippines, July 4, 1946.
