Occupation of Poland
The occupation of Poland began with an agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939. According to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, Germany would be allowed to invade Poland without Soviet interference. Germany invaded Poland on September 1,1939. Eastern Poland was then invaded and annexed by the Soviet Union in late September,1939.
On June 22,1941, Nazi Germany invaded the USSR (Operation Barbarossa) The lands annexed by the Soviets were overrun by German troops in the course of the initially successful German attack on the USSR. Germany's occupation of Poland concluded with the defeat of Nazism by the Allies (which included the USSR) in April-May 1945.
German administration was called the "Generalgouvernement" (General Government)
Polish stamps with Third Reich overprint were used until early 1940 when Nazi Generalgouvernement stamps were issued.
