Hi, thanks for your question! Unfortunately Apple decided to change the cord needed to charge and connect their newer generation of products, such as the Nano 7th Gen and the iPhone 5. Here is a link just to show you the one you will need to get, in no way am I promoting this site, it's for reference only. See how one of the plugs is a lot smaller than the one in my photo? (the other plug is the same standard USB plug which is on both cords.) You'll also want to get another piece, it's an adapter to be able to plug the nano into the wall to charge. The cord will only connect it to a computer, the computer will charge it while plugged in. This photo shows all the pieces mentioned, although you don't necessarily have to buy Apple, there are other companies who make these pieces for a lot less money. Good luck! Hope this helped!
