Yes, it's fine and thread-like, but has more body and weight that regular sewing thread.

I don't know about doilies. This thread is thin enough, but sort of wiry. I think it would need to be used along with regular yarn to give a metallic accent and be easier to work with. I think it might be difficult to work up alone and might not even look good that way. Maybe someone else will come along who's worked with it before, to better answer your question.
