Description

The listing, Icart Christmas Card has ended.

This 7 1/2" x 5 3/4 " Ivory colored card is by the famous Icart , internationally known artist, and was produced for a Christmas Card for Mary Chester Guild(I'm not sure if she was his customer or if it was a Guild named after "Mary Chester". I did a quick search on the internet but found nothing like this little card, Louis Icart was born in Toulouse , France in 1888 and died in 1950 in Monmartre , and produced many, many etchings, and prints. He was best know for his "Art Deco "women, and was quickly discovered by Hollywood collectors to the pointhe couldn't keep up with demand. He also did a number or erotic images, and also bronze scultptures. This card appears to be a real print ,possibly a litho and is signed in the plate, I have no way to verify that except I am an artist myself , and if you look at the bottom right it says "Maquet Gr." I take to mean Maquet was the engraver(or printer), Again I tried to find info about the printer but found nothing, except a card on Abe Books of Maquet Gravures,Rue De La Paix,No. 10, Paris. that is being sold by a rare book dealer, and is a trade card, and the only one I could find, which would be a nice addition to have with this Icart card .
Icart's work is easily found on the internet , where you can find extensive prints ranging from thousands of dollars for originals to reproduction posters for $20 and up. He was and still is extremely popular!!He married Fanny Volmer a beautiful young lady who died in the early 1970's, she was in the Couturier business and is often the subject of his art. This print, I should say , appears to have been hand colored in the face and the snow which is visibly textured. This of course would be a spectacular gift for any collector of Icart, Art Deco or prints or any art lover ,or anyone in the Fashion industry which was Icart favorite subject!! I first came across Icart at my Grandparents house as a kid, over 50 years ago. Good Luck!!

I should say , I really have no idea howto price this, even the signature maybe real ,I don't know. So I am starting low with 5000 , and I'm not doing a GIN because I have no idea how high it will go, but I'd imagine it can go quite high. Most of Icart's Prints (even the originals) are multiples you can find at many galleries, but in all of the years , I have searched , I have not found another of these. It maybe the only one left. I don't know but that's what I think.(Most people eventually through out Christmas Cards ,but a Christmas Card by a big name Artist such as Icart is. could be extremely valuable to a collector, but at the same time I wanted to start at a reasonable price for everyone to have a chance. I posted this under Antique because Icart is known for ART DECO style.

Also there is some mild foxing on the front outside, but not terribly visible, and normal wear for a card this age. I would frame it up in a Art Deco style frame and matting (Icart's framing was generally a fairly simple twenties style, sleek and not too overstated.I do recommend using archival or acid free matte boards and backing (if you remind me I will ship it with Acid free boards , the size or larger than the print, but it can be made bigger by adding a box frame with a deep matte or liner inside.)
