Learning's going to be easier with the larger sizes - 8 is a good start.

Definitely try worsted weight yarn and size 8 or 9 needles. Your knitting may be a bit tight at first, but keep going it will loosen up. Use scrap yarn that you can use only for practice and don't pull out your practice work. Just keep going, you will see how much you improve. When you learn something new, pick up that yarn and try the next stitch you want to learn.
