The listing, Mystery beans - Organic! has ended.
This 'mystery' bean was grown by Eatwell Farms - an organic CSA in Dixon, CA. Beautiful, isn't it?
We THINK it is one of the 10 bean varieties that the folks at Eatwell are growing in partnership with the Ag Department at the University of California, Davis, but there's not much info on the project out there -- it's all very hush-hush (or maybe they just assume no one cares?)
Apparently, the plant scientists at UCD are trialing 'promising' rare beans from the USDA GRIN (Germplasm Resources Information Network). That's a repository of the seeds of plants from all over the world -- most of them are heritage varieties from some village or other, others are the product of plant breeding projects in other countries. The object of the trials at Eatwell Farm is to identify productive, tasty, and nutritious varieties that are suitable for American-style organic farming methods.
So let's help them out! Try this bean - see what you think. If it tastes half as good as it looks, it'll be a winner!
Pretty sure it's a bush variety. Might make great green beans too.
You'll be getting 20 beans!
