tap them on your tooth-yep that's what I said. lol. if it sounds / feels hollow, & the surface is warm -it is probably plastic. stone or shell has a cool feel & the sound is like glass. might sound crazy but it is true.

Well I am not so sure on the tooth test they do not sound hollow, but I cannot be sure.

These are always cold to the touch

well you could do the test on a known stone like an engagement ring-that would give you an idea of what kind of feel & sound you are looking/listening for (a tapping-clicking sound)- the cooler temp usually indicates a stone or shell- I have been into jewelry since I was little & my mom taught me that trick to test for organic(real) stone.

They do look like shell, but if you look at the back, usually shell is curved, like the shape of a shell(I think this type was made from the Giant Conch shell in the olden days., the modern Chinese still make some and I think maybe in the Phillipines. If they are resin or plastic the backs will usually be flat and you may see casting lines,or grinding wheel marks on the back (bubbles are also an indication of plastic). Avon , for instance makes great reproductions! , but these because of the color differences ,I'd say are real shell.(If they were, say Avon, they would be 100% identical.
