The listing, Occupied Japan , Boy playing flute!! Adorable!! has ended.
This figure was purchased years ago by my mother(now in her 90's !!) I've had it quite a while myself ,but I know she bought it at a big Antiques show ) I would say it's been in the family easily forty yrs now, maybe more! She got it in the Tiffany box, so I thought it was kind of fun, so I will include the box , too, if you would like it. The figure is marked on the bottom "Made in Occupied Japan" which for you younger folks, who may not be old enough to remember(like me!!) , Japan marked exported goods like this to send out of the country, while we kept things in check during the 2nd World War. And pieces like this are highly collectible and getting harder to find all of the time, as they were only marked for the duration we occupied their country until things quieted down. This piece is in good condition, the crack on the bottom happened at the time of firing in the kiln. It's made of hard porcelain, so unlike softpaste it won't continue to crack. There is a little grey glaze missing on his wig at the top, which maybe from some wear or handling. It could be touched up with a bit of acrylic or oil paint that would be reversible. Otherwise, I wouldn't touch it unless you are a professional restorer, just better to leave it be.There is also a bit worn off the back of the wig , too, and a tiny chip less than1/8 x1/8 in. at the base of the back of the yellow coat which also can be touched up. This is all normal for a piece made in the 1940's under the circumstances. One the right hand I thought it was missing fingers, but I looked and it's glazed over with clear glaze , so I think it's how it was meant to be.The Colors are rich and lovely! It stands 5 1/2" tall and the diameter at the base is 3" I believe it says "Handpainted" in a small circle inside "The Occupied Japan" .Please be Listia verified , before bidding (your address is all I need) It's for my benefit as much as yours.
