The first photo is like what you will get- just a rooted shoot. The big plant takes some time, but all things considered, not too much. The plant can survive with very little water, but if you give it lots, it just grows faster (unlike succulents that often die). Also, if you have an unsightly leaf, just cut it off and stick it in the dirt, and it will usually grow a new plant. I've had them grow even from just a broken tip. (can take many months, though)
