Great northern white beans are a bean that you harvest after the pods are dry and can use fresh. This bean plant is a bush variety/semi-vining, upright position that keeps pods from touching the ground. Great northern white beans grows to about 2 feet tall. Plant in the spring,temperatures are at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Soil Preparation

Loosen soil in your garden to a depth of 6 inches.

Sprinkle all-purpose fertilizer granules on the soil .

Make either a garden bed or rows-24 inches between apart.
Planting

Place a great northern bean seed with the eye pointing down.

Press the seed into the soil about 1 inch deep. Cover the top of the seed lightly .

Plant all of your seeds 4 to 6 inches apart.
Watering

Water the beans seeds thoroughly after planting them.

Water near the base of seedlings after they emerge.

Water the plants in the morning to keep the soil evenly moist. Do not let the soil dry between irrigations.
Harvesting

Maintain the same watering schedule for 65 to 90 days to maturity.

Check the bean pods during this time. When the pods become dry and the beans are enlarged in the pods, they are ready to harvest.

Pull each bean pod off the plants when the pods are very dry.

Shell the dry beans from the pods.
Pests

Pick pests off bean plants by hand to remove them. Crush the pests and their eggs or place them in a bucket of soapy water.

Spray a strong stream of water on the pests in the morning. Common bean pests are aphids, flea beetles, leafhoppers, bean beetles and mites.

Remove all dying vegetation and plant matter from around the beans to deter pests.
Tip
Watering beans in the mornings keep excess water off the plants’ leaves.
Great northern beans do not require additional fertilizer after the plants establish roots.
