Set in 19th-century Cornwall, JAMAICA INN (based on the novel by Daphne Dumaurier) features a young orphan who visits her aunt only to discover she is residing in a haven for throat-slashing pirates. A period melodrama, the film features Maureen O'Hara in one of her earlier roles. In the second film, EASY VIRTUE, a music-score-enhanced silent film follows the circuitous path of a woman's love life beginning with an older abusive husband. After divorcing the rogue, she carries on an affair with a young painter and then marries a sweet young man who knows nothing of her past. Hitchcock uses crafted fades, close-ups, and dolly shots that anticipate the modern zoom lens.
