Description

The listing, ~~ Red Vine Spinach, Basella rubra~~ 15 seeds has ended.

70 days. This beautiful plant is not a true spinach but a different species (Basella rubra). A heat-loving Asian vine that has lovely red stems and delicious green leaves. Can be grown as an annual in many areas or as a perennial in sub-tropical areas.

The succulent leaves and stem tips are rich in vitamins A and C and are a good source of iron and calcium. They may be eaten raw in salads, boiled, steamed, stir-fried, or added to soups, stews, tofu dishes, and curries. Or you can use them as a filling for quiche, omelets, savory turnovers, and potpies.

A thing of beauty -- propagation from seed is a snap. Happily, the red-stemmed cultivar of Malabar spinach comes true from seed. Saving seed is easy too. Simply dry the entire ripe fruit and use it for planting the following year.

BEWARE OF ROSE SEEDS! There's a reason why we don't see rose seeds sold in big box garden centers.

Also beware of home collected seeds from hybrids plants.

no kidding on those bewares, another one is apple seeds. apples do not grow true from seed either, only way to get the same tree type is to graft or clone from the one you want :) I snort every time I see rose seed offered, especially the "multicolored" roses, since roses also do not reproduce true to type from seed, and I have seen stats that say there is less than 25% germination on the seed on top of that. And the multicolored ones are white and you split the stem and put each section of stem into a different color of food color and let it soak up into the flower LOL

IKR? There are many sellers that hope for buyer ignorance. It's nice to know ppl are reading. Maybe they will actually research more before throwing away their credits.

Hopefully, they will learn that to get other viable seeds, seeds need to be mature. I see lots of vegetable seeds (especially peppers) being sold that will likely never germinate because they weren't harvested from ripe fruit.

BTW, thank you for stopping by and making a post on the matter. That means a lot!

This vine is always flowering an producing seed, but it doesn't stop producing edible leaves. About the only thing that will stop it is cold weather.

Did you watch the youtube vid I posted? You should if you haven't. It will help.

Here's another and you can where you can see the flower and seeds close up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UqRytt1QUU
