The listing, (6) 1943 Steel Pennies PDS mints Rare has ended.

The 1943 steel penny is a wartime issue made of steel, and coated with zinc. During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort (to make shell casings) that the U.S. penny was made out of steel. Steel pennies are scarcely found in circulation but when they were being circulated it is said that many people mistook them for dimes. After the war the mints made an attempt to round up all the steel pennies which caused these coins to become even more rare. Steel pennies are an interesting piece of history and great for collectors of all ages. This would make a great first set for someone just getting interested in coin collecting. Happy bidding!

Up for grabs are six 1943 steel pennies from three different mints. There are two from each mint. I have attached a picture of the coins that I will be shipping out. The copper penny will not be shipped out due to weight limits but it does show how they compare to their sister copper cents. This item has free shipping within the United States of America.

the center penny is a copper penny. zinc and copper look different.

1981 was the last year they made copper pennies.. now they are just zinc

Pennies now are 2.5% copper with a zinc core. They have never made a zinc only penny.

In 2009 they did make some 95% copper pennies as well but only a few. I just wanted to post the metal ammounts because of the post above yours.
