The following is what the encyclopedia says:In the metalworking field, a divider caliper, popularly called a compass, is used in the process of marking out locations. The points are sharpened so that they act as scribers, one leg can then be placed in the dimple created by a center or ***** punch and the other leg pivoted so that it scribes a line on the workpiece's surface, thus forming an arc or circle.

the coat is fake but people think it is real! it is so warm and cuddly! I use those for raising flat metal into bowls. I first cut a circle. I put the circles on the metal about 1/4 inch apart and just hit them with the hammer. after ever round of annealing we put the circles back so we know where to hit. I should send you photos of some bowls I have made!
