Rooting it allows you to delete the stock asps you don't want clearing up storage space. It also allows you to flash whatever ROM you want into the phone, basically allowing you to make the phone however you like. It can be undone if you don't like the results. Keep in mind that if you do it incorrectly you may break your phone, that being said I loved the results of it being rooted.

I just realized today this phone with 2.2.1 version of android allows the free wifi hotspot using the app quicksettings... so easy for a free 3g hotspot for your computer or tablet to connect to, anywhere you go. wow, i feel so dumb. so angry i could have been using this feature on mine for the last 3 years.

Aside from the fact it involves PRL (Preferred Roaming List) flashing, Verizon and Sprint do not activate each others devices. It would take some hacking by the you to make it work. Simply put, customer service will not be of any help to the you.

While both Verizon and Sprint do use the same cellular technology technology, and Virgin Mobile does use the Sprint network it won't help the you.
