It is to put sachet bags in. You put the scented bag in it and put it in the dresser drawer or wardrobe closet.

It is used to put potpourri scents in. Back when people did not bathe very often they put herbs or dried lavender or other dried flowers in them and they would wear it around the neck or put it in a reticule and sniff it when an odorous person was near.

Sorry it is called a pomander.

It is a pomander used to hang in a closet or lay in a drawer to scent clothing or lingerie. In the 1600 & 1700s they were often worn about one's person to combat body odor or the stench of the streets. Women often carried one folded up in a handkerchief or slipped down into the bodice to ameliorate odors encountered in the streets or on the "ton" as it was called! I use them in closets & drawers & have most of my life.

I was thinking it is either hatpins or for scents for back when it stank everywhere

Maybe pills but I don't think so it's to ventilated and snuff isn't that tobacco that would be rediculous.
